Dancing for Change: How Uganda Celebrated Global Handwashing Day through Dance4WASH
As the world came together to celebrate Global Handwashing Day, Uganda was not left behind. For the past three years, Skillz Dance Fest and Street Anatomy International have joined hands with Viva con Agua Uganda to explore how dance can become a powerful model for social behavior change, promoting positive messages around Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH).
Through Viva con Agua’s inspiring work—both in software (education and awareness) and hardware (infrastructure and clean water access)—our collaboration has focused on one innovative approach: Dance4WASH. This initiative uses the energy, creativity, and community spirit of dance to inspire children, teachers, and creatives to take action for clean water and hygiene.
Over the years, our teams have co-led creative and practical training sessions for primary school teachers, social workers, and artists across Uganda, helping them see how movement and rhythm can communicate vital hygiene messages in ways that are memorable and culturally resonant.
This past Tuesday, we reached an incredible milestone — the Dance4WASH School Competition, featuring 30 schools and over 700 pupils from Kampala and Wakiso. Each school choreographed original dance anthems inspired by the theme of Global Handwashing Day. The performances were filled with color, energy, and powerful storytelling, proving once again that learning can be joyful and transformative.
At the end of the day, three schools emerged as this year’s WASH Champions:🏆 St. Anne Primary School🏆 Kasangati Primary School🏆 Mugongo CoU Primary School
But beyond the competition, the event stood as a testament to what collaboration, creativity, and purpose can achieve. It was a celebration of social impact, a reminder that every child deserves access to safe drinking water and the ability to keep their hands clean, and that no child should miss school because of preventable hygiene challenges.
We extend heartfelt gratitude to everyone who made this possible — the Viva con Agua Uganda team, Skillz Dance Fest, participating schools, teachers, pupils, and all the supporters who continue to believe in the power of art to create meaningful change.
Together, we dance not just for expression — but for a cleaner, healthier, and more connected world.
